CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Kendrec Ferrara scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in leading Furman to a 76-71 win over The Citadel on Saturday night.

Both teams entered the game knowing the winner would break out of the cellar of the Southern Conference and Furman (7-12, 1-5) appeared most determined to leave The Citadel behind by taking a 39-25 lead into the half.

The Citadel (4-16, 0-5) regrouped near the middle of the second half and over the next eight minutes cut the Paladin lead to 62-58.

Furman allowed The Citadel to stay in the game down the stretch by missing some key free throws and the Bulldogs trailed 72-69 on a Brian White jumper with 17 seconds left.

A pair of free throws by Stephen Croone and William Gates in the final 12 seconds locked in the win for Furman.

Ashton Moore led The Citadel with 25 points.
