HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Javier Castellano has won his first Eclipse Award as horse racing’s top jockey.
Castellano was announced as the winner at horse racing’s awards ceremony for the best of 2013 on Saturday night at Gulfstream Park. Castellano led all jockeys with 362 wins and $26.2 million in purse earnings last year, a single-season money record.
Castellano won 24 graded stakes races along with jockey titles at Gulfstream, Belmont and Saratoga in 2013. He also rode Ria Antonia to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita.
He received 134 of the 248 votes cast, with Gary Stevens (65) finishing a distant second and Joel Rosario (21) placing third.
