BEIJING (AP) — Chinese Olympic champion speed skater Wang Meng has fractured her ankle and will like miss the Sochi Games next month.

Deputy short track team manager Liu Hao said Wang collided with a teammate while making a turn during practice on Thursday. She underwent surgery Thursday night.

Such an injury usually takes six weeks to recover from, while the Olympic Games opening ceremony is just 21 days away. The short track events begin on Feb. 10.

However, Liu says the team is not giving up hope and will stick to its original training plan.

Wang is China’s most decorated Winter Olympian ever with four golds, one silver and one bronze. She was considered the favorite at Sochi in her signature event, the 500 meters.
