TYLER, Texas (AP) — Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty has won the inaugural Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award that recognizes the top Division I offensive player with Texas ties.
The award was presented Friday night at a ceremony in Tyler, the hometown of former Heisman Trophy winner Campbell.
Petty accounted for 4,409 total yards and 46 yards in his first season as the starter at Baylor (11-2), which was the Big 12 champion and went to its first Bowl Championship Series game. The fourth-year junior waited his turn behind Heisman winner Robert Griffin III and record-setting quarterback Nick Florence.
The other finalists were Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro, Texas A&M receiver Mike Evans, Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel and Missouri quarterback James Franklin, who is from Corinth Texas.
