SEATTLE — Washington has added women’s sand volleyball as a varsity sport in time to begin in the spring of 2014.

The school announced the addition on Thursday. Sand volleyball will become Washington’s 22nd intercollegiate sport.

Keegan Cook, an assistant for Washington’s women’s indoor team, will be the head coach for the sand team. Jim McLaughlin, Washington’s head women’s volleyball coach, will oversee the program. All 11 returners from Washington’s Final Four indoor team in 2013 will play for the sand team, including AVCA national player of the year Krista Vansant.

Washington is the eighth Pac-12 school to add the sport, joining Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and USC.
