WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Winston-Salem State has promoted defensive coordinator Kienus Boulware to head coach.
The school announced Boulware’s hiring Tuesday night.
The 40-year-old Boulware says taking over the Rams is “a dream job.”
Winston-Salem State has led the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in total defense in each of Boulware’s four seasons as coordinator.
Before that, he was the defensive coordinator at Shaw for four years and his 2007 and ’08 defenses led Division II.
Boulware is a native of Thomasville who played two seasons as a linebacker for Mack Brown at North Carolina before the discovery of a spinal cord abnormality ended his playing career following the 1994 season.
He replaces Connell Maynor, who took over at Hampton last month.
