KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Former 100-meter world record holder Asafa Powell has told a Jamaican panel that he did not inform anti-doping officials about most of the supplements he was taking because the products were new and he couldn’t remember their names.
The 31-year-old sprinter testified Tuesday before a disciplinary panel of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission. Over two days of hearings, at least, Powell and his attorneys will try to explain why he tested positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrone.
Powell’s former teammate, Sherone Simpson, tested positive for the same stimulant at the sprinting powerhouse’s national trials in June. Powell, Simpson and their agent have blamed a newly-hired trainer who provided the sprinters with supplements.
Lab tests showed that the stimulant was in one of the supplements that the athletes say they were given.
