Email scam targets utilities customers

An email scam is targeting customers of Portland General Electric, NW Natural and Pacific Power.

The email sent to utilities customers around the country claims to be from Atmos Energy, a natural gas utility based in Dallas, Texas, and PG&E, a natural gas and electric company in San Francisco, which is not affiliated with Portland General (PGE). A fake billing message tells customers that their bill is ready and provides a link to view it. Clicking on the link leads to a website containing malware, software that damages or disables computers.

Anyone who gets this email should not click on any links. PGE, NW Natural and Pacific Power customers are encouraged to long onto their accounts through the utilities’ sites to review their billing statements. Those with questions about the scam can contact PGE customer service at 503-228-6322 or 800-542-8818, NW Natural at 800-422-4012 or Pacific Power at 888-221-7070.
