Spaniards Nani Roma, Marc Coma keep Dakar lead

CALAMA, Chile (AP) — Spaniards Nani Roma and Marc Coma maintained their leads in the overall standings of the Dakar Rally after Monday’s eighth stage.

Roma finished only sixth in the car stage, but still leads 11-time champion Stephane Peterhansel by 23 minutes, 46 seconds in the overall. Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar won the stage, 1:12 ahead of Peterhansel and 2:15 in front of Carlos Sainz of Spain.

In bikes, Coma leads fellow Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort by 38:08 in the overall. Jordi Viladoms, another Spaniard, is almost 1 1/2 hours behind.

Frenchman Cyril Despres won the stage with Barreda Bort 2:09 behind and Coma trailing by 2:15.

Tuesday’s ninth stage is from Calama to Iquique, Chile, with the finish on Saturday in Valapariso, Chile.
