Try this: Winter’s night & weddings

Columbia Springs and Clark County Environmental Services sponsor a bat and owl workshop for kids and parents in 2011 at the Water Resources Education Center.

The first Second Saturday event of 2014 will explore a winter’s night, which animals are out and about, the sounds they make and how they move. Second Saturdays explore a different topic each month through hands-on activities, crafts and games for children and their families. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

When: 1 to 3 p.m. today.

2. Celtic benefit performance

The Winds and Strings Celtic band will present its seventh annual concerts to benefit the Winter Hospitality Overflow shelter program. Joining the ensemble will be Scottish piper Sophie Anna Mcduffey. The concerts will feature songs from its debut CD. There will be two performances today at St. Andrew Lutheran Church and one performance Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

When: 3 and 7 p.m. today and 3 p.m. Sunday.

3. Tasting and toasting downtown

Downtown beverage makers will come together for Drink This, an evening to show off their craft through demonstrations and special tastings. The event will include four wineries, a coffee roaster, three breweries, two distilleries, a kombucha maker and local restaurants. There will be a walking map at every location. Participants can work their way downtown from Arnada Naturals, 2407 Main St., or start at Torque Coffee, 501 Columbia St.

When: 4 to 9 p.m. today.

Where: Downtown Vancouver, between Sixth and 24th streets.

4. Wedding ideas

The Clark County Wedding Show will host caterers, cake designers, photographers, stylists and more to showcase their services. There will be a wedding table competition, free on-site makeovers, a “man cave” and bridal fashion show.

5. ‘Lone Survivor’ tells war tale

Four Navy SEALS (Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster) are dispatched to document the activities of a Taliban operative in the Afghanistan mountains. But the group is confronted by a family of local shepherds with unknown intentions, forcing the group into a stalemate of ethics versus survival. “Lone Survivor” is rated R.
