The Portland Winterhawks picked up a point in the Western Hockey League standings, but were topped 3-2 in a shootout in Victoria on Friday by the Royals in the first of back-to-back games between the teams.

Nic Petan and Brendan Leipsic scored the goals for Portland (26-12-3-2), with Leipsic’s coming on a power play in the second period for a 2-1 advantage.

Petan’s goal in the first period was also on a power play.

Victoria (29-14-0-2) got the equalizer 6:42 into the third on a power play goal from Steven Hodges to make it 2-2, and it remained that way through regulation, setting up overtime.

After a scoreless overtime, Victoria’s Jack Walker scored the lone shootout goal to give the Royals the win.

Victoria has won all three meetings against the Winterhawks this season.
