LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A rain of 3-pointers by Kasey Shepherd and Kevin Brown pulled Louisiana-Lafayette out of an early deficit as the Rajin’ Cajuns stormed past Texas-Arlington 90-70 Saturday.
The visiting Mavericks went from leading 8-7 to trailing 21-8 in the 4-minute turnaround.
The Rajin’ Cajuns (10-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) sank 9 of 22 3-point baskets and also scored 31 points from the free-throw line, scoring in bunches to build leads of as many as 18 points by halftime and by 27 in the second half.
Shawn Long led Louisiana-Lafayette with 22 points and seven blocks, Shepherd scored 17 on 3-for-4 3-point shooting, Elfrid Payton and Xavian Rimmer added 12 apiece.
Lonnie McClanahan led Texas-Arlington (6-10, 1-3) with 27 points, Brandon Edwards 10. The Mavericks were held to 39 percent shooting (24-61) and hit just 5 of 20 3-point tries.
Bench strength was a factor as Louisiana-Lafayette reserves outscored their Mavericks counterparts 49-15.
