Gardner leads American to 69-62 win over Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) — Darius Gardner made 7 of 8 field goal attempts and completed 7 of 9 free throws to total 21 points as American came back in the second half to defeat Colegate 69-62 Saturday.

John Schoof had 15 points, Kyle Kager added 13 and Jesse Reed had 11 for American (8-7, 4-0 Patriot League).

American trailed 34-26 at the break, but made 14 of 18 field goal attempts in the second period, outscoring Colgate 43 to 28.

Colgate(6-9, 0-4) led 45-38 when the Eagles went on a 17-4 run to pull ahead by six with 6:03 remaining.

The Raiders closed to 61-59 following a three-point play by Damon Sherman-Newsome with 1:10 left. Schoof then made a 3-point shot to extend the lead to 64-59. Gardner and Kager combined for five free throws in the final 31 seconds to secure the win.

Ethan Jacobs led Colegate with a career-high 19 points.
