Washington has top pick in women’s soccer draft

CHICAGO (AP) — The Washington Spirit will have the No. 1 pick in next week’s college draft by the National Women’s Soccer League.

The league’s second annual draft will be held Jan. 17 in Philadelphia at the convention of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The draft will consist of 36 selections over four rounds. The order was determined by reverse finish at the end of the 2013 regular season.

As the lone expansion club to join the NWSL this season, the Houston Dash will have the second choice as well as the first pick in the second, third and fourth rounds.

The Chicago Red Stars have the third and fourth overall selections. The rest of the nine picks for the first round are: FC Kansas City, Sky Blue FC, Seattle Reign FC, Boston Breakers and Western New York Flash.
