UTSA pulls away from Marshall late for 90-81 win

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Keon Lewis came off the Texas-San Antonio bench to score 23 points, 14 in the second half, to lead the Roadrunners to a 90-81 win over Marshall in the Conference USA opener for both schools Thursday night.

Shawn Smith hit a pair of free throws with 11:15 left to pull Marshall into a 61-61 tie, but Lewis helped fuel a 9-2 run with seven points to put UTSA up by six points and the Roadrunners padded the lead down the stretch.

Phillip Jones and Devon Aqusi had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for UTSA (5-9, 1-0 C-USA), which shot 56.6 percent from the field (30-for-53) in the game.

Kareem Canty scored 26 points on 9-of-22 shooting to lead Marshall (6-10, 0-1 C-USA). Shawn Smith added 16 points for the Thundering Herd and Chris Thomas added another 11. Marshall was 29 of 65 (44.6 percent) from the field.
