ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Reserve infielder Jayson Nix has agreed to a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.
The deal announced Thursday includes an invitation to major league spring training.
The 31-year-old Nix appeared in 87 games for the New York Yankees in 2013, batting .236 with three homers and 24 RBIs. He played 48 games at shortstop, 41 at third base and four at second base.
Nix is a .218 career hitter in parts of six seasons with the Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies.
The Rays also extended an invitation to major league spring training to outfielder Jerry Sands, who cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Durham.
