How does 50 degrees and rain feel? Pretty nice I would say. That’s what it was Wednesday afternoon and there is more where that came from. Rain today through Sunday before things dry up next week. The freezing level has been high enough where most of the snow action is at the higher ski areas. That will lower after a large storm Saturday and places like Ski Bowl and Government Camp should get a foot to a foot and a half. Good news. Friday it will be rainy at the passes.
We haven’t had much storm action since late September so the incoming cold front Saturday is kind of big news right now. Strong winds will hit the lowland valleys where I would expect gusts as of this writing around 40 mph or a little higher. That could change. And another inch or two of rain in the bucket. More good news.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday I still hadn’t received an inch of rain for the month. I had measured .82 of an inch. We will catch up for the month in the next few days. Temperature-wise I don’t see any freezing weather heading our way, with seasonal temperatures in the forecast, highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s. Most likely another 50-degree day thrown in when the south winds kick in.
Looking back what I wrote 10 years ago today, “I bet many folks had cabin fever this week as an arctic air mass held Clark County and beyond in its icy grip. My biggest frustration was the weather broadcasts, which kept calling for a rapid warm-up. Folks, when you get such a deep layer of cold air coming through the Columbia Gorge, it takes more than one or two storms to knock it out. The first storm brought us heavy snow. The second, sleet and freezing rain. The third, freezing rain. The fourth finally brought mostly rain Thursday afternoon with spots of freezing rain near the mouth of the Gorge.”
