HOUSTON (AP) — Calvin Godfrey scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Southern University to a 79-71 victory over Texas Southern Monday night.

Malcolm Miller contributed 15 points and Trelun Banks added 10 for Southern (6-9, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference).

Godfrey made 13 of his 19 field goal attempts as Southern led most of the game, holding a 44-39 lead at the half. The Tigers (5-9, 1-1), trailing 56-45 with 13:50 remaining in the game, went on a 10-0 run to take their first lead at 68-66 with 5:20 left. But Godfrey quickly made a jump shot and followed with a layup to put the Jaguars back in front to stay. Texas Southern had only one field goal in the final 5 minutes.

Aaric Murray had 24 points and eight rebounds for Texas Southern. Jose Rodriquez added 13, D.D. Scarver had 11 and DeAngelo Scott totaled 10.
