NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) — Michael Holyfield scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Jabari Peters scored five of his 21 points in the second overtime as Sam Houston State beat Northwestern State 107-104 Thursday night.
Sam Houston State (8-4, 1-0 Southland Conference) opened the second overtime with a 9-2 run, taking a 101-94 lead with 2:36 remaining. Layups by Zikiteran Woodley and Jalan West pulled the Demons within 101-98 with 1:30 to play, but SHSU went 6 of 6 from the charity stripe in the final 26 seconds to seal the victory.
Sabri Thompson, who scored a career-high 16 points, hit a 3-pointer to give Northwestern State (4-7, 0-1) a 92-90 lead in the first overtime but Nathaniel Mason’s two free throws with 6 seconds left sent the game into double-overtime.
DeQuan Hicks scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Demons.
Peters finished with seven boards and six assists.
