CHENNAI, India (AP) — Indian wild-card entrant Yuki Bhambri advanced to the quarterfinals of the Chennai Open on Thursday after third-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy retired during their match.
Bhambri dominated his 16th-ranked opponent, who struggled with a leg strain and conceded the match when Bhambri was leading 6-1, 5-5.
Bhambri, ranked 195th, broke serve in the fourth game and won the next three to wrap up the first set with ease. Fognini managed to limit his unforced errors in the second set, but gave up just when he seemed to be finding his rhythm.
Bhambri will next take on fifth-seeded Vasek Pospisil of Canada, who was given a walk-over by Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan.
Fourth-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire and sixth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain also reached the last eight with straight-set wins.
