Three commercial boats landed 2,349 pounds of smelt on Monday from the lower Columbia River.
Olaf Langness of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said those were Washington landings only. Oregon’s landing results were not yet available on Tuesday afternoon.
Langness said the Washington landings came from the Wahkiakum County portion of the river.
State staff checked the Cowlitz River on Monday but did not see any bird or marine mammal activity that would indicate smelt are in the stream.
The Cowlitz will be open from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday for dipping from the bank. That will be the final of four scheduled dipping periods.
It is not yet been determined if additional time for sport dipping will be allowed.
Commercial dipping in the Columbia downstream of the Lewis River is allowed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays through March 6.
