Week 11 winter prep athlete of the week nominees

Nominees for high school winter sports athlete of the week, sponsored by Athletes Corner, for the week ending Feb. 22. Because of voting set-up error, we will extend voting to 8 p.m. Friday with results published in Saturday’s Columbian.

ALEX BERFANGER, UNION BOYS WRESTLING: Berfanger won the 170-pound state championship in Class 4A, beating Amos Diagbe of Kent-Meridian 11-4 in the final.

KASEY CALWELL, CAMAS SWIMMING: Calwell placed second in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke at the Class 4A state meet and helped Camas place in two state relays.

JUNIOR GODINHO, UNION WRESTLING: Godinho won the 132-pound state championship in Class 4A, beating two-time state champion Noah Cuzzetto of Lake Stevens in overtime to win the final.

JARON HAMLIK, PRAIRIE SWIMMING: Hamlik placed third in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke at the Class 3A state meet, posting All-American consideration times in both swims.

GUNNAR METZGER, HUDSON’S BAY WRESTLING: Metzger won the 152-pound state championship in Class 3A, securing the title with a pin of Malik Haythorne of Hazen.
