Try This: The sound of ‘Gold’

Bravo's Washington Chamber Orchestra plays along with Chaplin comedy

Two unusual orchestral concerts will take place this weekend, one spotlighting the musical talents of Charlie Chaplin, the other highlighting a tuba concerto.

Charlie Chaplin’s silent comedy “The Gold Rush” will be given surround sound, thanks to Bravo’s Washington Chamber Orchestra. The ensemble performs Chaplin’s original film score as the movie plays. The 1925 film features Chaplin in his famous Little Tramp role, as he travels to the Yukon for the Klondike Gold Rush, only to fall in love with a lonely saloon girl.

When: 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s annual February concert, “Love Notes for Melissa,” is dedicated to conductor Salvador Brotons’ wife, Dr. Melissa Brotons. It also features guest musician Ja’Ttik Clark, the principal tuba for the Oregon Symphony. He will perform a Ralph Vaughan Williams tuba concerto with the symphony. The concert also includes the rarely performed rhapsody “Taras Bulba” by Leoš Janáek and Franz Liszt’s “Les Preludes.”

When: 3 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Sunday.

2. Young performers on two stages

Journey Theater Arts Group presents “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” an adaptation of the Broadway musical about Ariel the mermaid, who longs to visit the world above the ocean’s surface, regardless of what her father, King Triton, thinks. To trade her fins for legs, Ariel makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula.

When: 7 tonight.

Washougal High School Drama presents “Macbeth,” Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of greed and revenge, with a film-noir spin. It’s set in Chicago during the 1930s, with gangsters one step ahead of the police, as Macbeth and his lady plot their rise to power.

3. Start planning for spring

The 67th annual Portland Home and Garden Show will be filled with a variety of inspiring ideas for spring. Attendees will be greeted with plants from dozens of nurseries and showcases by builders, garden and landscape designers. Learn from demonstrations by home experts, explore displays by artisans or enjoy appearances by local musicians, chefs and authors.

4. Supporting veterans with song

Luau Dinner and Concert 4 Vets will feature an array of performers to help benefit the Clark County Veterans Court Board. There will be performances by Groove Nation, Old Time Fiddlers, guitarist Ernesto Quilban, the Ricky Lee Jackson band and Mark Stevenz as Elvis.

5. One last assignment

Kevin Costner stars as a veteran C.I.A. agent recently diagnosed with cancer who has a chance at retirement and medical treatment in exchange for one last assignment. While he hunts down a dangerous terrorist in Paris, he tries to reconnect with his estranged teen daughter (Hailee Steinfeld). “3 Day to Kill” is rated PG-13.
