Registration open for trails school
CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. — Registration opens Friday for the Columbia Cascades Trail Skills College April 25 to 27 at Marine Park.
The free event teaches how to build and maintain trails. Offerings include basic trail design, saw crew training, first aid, trail reconstruction, managing a trail crew and more.
The school is presented by the Pacific Crest Trail Association along with U.S. Forest Service, REI, Washington Trails Association, Backcountry Horsemen of Oregon and Washington and Trailkeepers of Oregon.
Camping at Marine Park is free during the event and meals will be provided to registered guests. Evening entertainment will feature live music, a gear raffle and a presentation on the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Beginner’s flyfishing class slated April 26
CAMAS — Enrollment is open for the Clark-Skamania Flyfishers Beginning Fly Fishing School on April 26 at Camas Meadows Golf Club, 4105 N.W. Camas Meadows Drive.
The school costs $45 and is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Topics include casting, equipment, entomology, knots, tactics and techniques and safety.
Lunch is provided. The class size is limited.

Club to offer bass fishing tips
PORTLAND — The Oregon Bass and Panfish Club’s annual dry clinic will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave.
Many of the club’s top anglers will share fishing tips and techniques, including advice on where to catch warm-water species in local rivers and lakes.
The club’s meetings are open to the public.
Application deadline near for bear hunts
OLYMPIA — Hunters must apply by Feb. 28 for a spring black bear hunting permit, applicable to specific areas of Washington.
A drawing in mid-March is scheduled for 383 permits in Western Washington and 314 hunts east of the Cascades.
Permit winners will receive notification in the mail by no later than March 31. Applicants also may check on the results of the drawing at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting.
To apply for a permit, hunters must purchase a special permit application and a 2014 hunting license that includes bear as a species option.
Hunting licenses, bear transport tags and bear permit applications may be purchased online at http://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/, by calling (866) 246-9453, or at any license vendor in the state.
Special permit applications, which require a correct hunt choice number, may be submitted online at http://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/, or by calling (877) 945-3492.
Neither bait nor hounds are allowed for bear hunting.
