The state of Washington has secured a $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to improve and further promote the state’s layoff-prevention program, also known as “work-sharing.”
Under the program, employers can reduce work hours for a group of employees as an alternative to layoffs during tough economic times. Workers affected by reduced hours have their lowered wages supplemented by a percentage of the weekly unemployment compensation available to them. The state will allocate $708,000 for enhancements to the program, while the remaining $1,4 million will go toward educating the public about the advantages of the program and increasing enrollment of employers into the program.
