Not everyone in Clark County was glued to a television Sunday afternoon to watch the Seattle Seahawks capture the team’s first Super Bowl victory.
Charla Johnson dropped off her husband at a Super Bowl party, then took her daughter, Kassy Johnson, to Westfield Vancouver mall.
“We decided to go have sushi and see a movie,” Charla Johnson said. The two were on their way to see “Last Vegas.”
They planned to meet up with family after the game.
During the Super Bowl game on Sunday, the mall appeared less crowded than expected for a weekend afternoon.
Some mall visitors camped out at a Dish Network kiosk, which broadcast the game on a few flat screen TVs. Others slowed as they walked by to check the score.
In JCPenney, an employee sporting a Marshawn Lynch jersey told her coworker, who was just getting off work, “Lucky you, you get to watch the game.”
Across town, Jennifer Heilman of Portland spent Sunday afternoon visiting the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site for the first time. She had just dropped her husband off at the airport; he was going on a business trip.
As for Heilman, “I’m not interested in watching the game,” she said. Instead, she walked her dog, Sam.
“It’s a good day to check (the park) out,” Heilman said. “It’s also quiet.”
Just because she missed the Super Bowl doesn’t mean she won’t be able to talk about it later, Heilman said. She and her husband planned to read up on the game so “we’ll know what to say when people ask.”
Heilman was one of a handful of people walking through the Fort Vancouver park. A couple of families used the park’s play area as the sun began to set.
Mario Portillo of Vancouver let his young daughter chase him around some trees.
The family dog barked excitedly.
“I’m not a fan of the Super Bowl,” he said. For him, Sunday was all about “enjoying the day with my kids.”
