Weather Eye: New Year will begin pleasantly, with dry weather, sunshine

Happy New Year!

I sincerely hope you all have a great new year and a good one weather-wise as well. We will certainly start off on a pleasant note with dry weather and sunshine. Temperatures will slowly start to rise today and continue through the weekend back to more seasonal levels.

After tonight, Friday and beyond forecast models keep our overnight low temperatures above freezing for quite a while. Unusual for early January.

December was a warm month. Here in Salmon Creek, I didn’t have a freezing temperature until Dec. 29. The last three days of the month were chilly. My warmest was 60 degrees on Dec. 11 and the coldest, 18 degrees on Dec. 31. Rainfall was moderate but still below average for the month with 5.66 inches. We had 20 days with measurable rain. At least we didn’t have inversions with days and days of dense fog like we can have in December.

The mountains had to wait until Christmas to get a good sustaining shot of snow but still need a whole lot more. Not much on the horizon coming our way any-time soon. The cold air mass that arrived is now mainly in the lower atmosphere. Timberline on Tuesday night was in the upper 30s while we were in the low 20s here in Clark County. Crazy? Yes, a strong inversion.

Two years ago, I had a couple inches of snow on the ground for New Year’s Eve. Pretty. This year, it will be just clear and cold. I still think we get out of this cold snap without any frozen precipitation. A weak low drops down Friday or Saturday but it will be a dry system with mainly clouds.
