SEATTLE — The Washington Poison Center wants people to be aware of potential seasonal hazards while enjoying holiday festivities, especially when children could be exposed. The organization made a list of things that should not be consumed.
• Holly berries and mistletoe contain a variety of poisons that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping.
• Bubble lights are made from an incandescent light and liquid-filled vial that people can be exposed to if the lights break. The liquid causes burns and skin irritation and the fumes can be dangerous.
• Button batteries are small cylindrical batteries used in portable electronics, watches and hearing aids. If children swallow them, they can become lodged within the esophagus or gastrointestinal tract. The breakdown of the battery releases a caustic material that can lead to severe burns.
