For the third year in a row, the Covington Colts won the Greater St. Helens League middle school wrestling district tournament.
With six wrestlers winning championships and 20 placing among the top six in their weight divisions, Covington edged Skyridge for the team title.
The tournament took place Dec. 12-13 at Union High School. The district includes middle schools from the Evergreen and Camas school districts.
Covington finished with 319 team points, 10 more than runner-up Skyridge. During the dual-meet schedule, Skyridge edged Covington by four points.
Winning district titles for Covington were Sanry Nguyen (who beat his brother Kevin in the 70-pound finals), Jordan Stanley (75 pounds), Alex Newberry (106), Daniel Barbera (155), George Rubio (165) and Antonio Mata (195).
Skyridge had seven wrestlers earn second place and one district champion. Bryan Hannon won the title at 130 pounds.
Pacific finished third in team points and had three district champions: Trent Hemann (136 pounds), Koby Hughes (145 pounds) and Garrett Chapman (unlimited).
Fourth-place Frontier had four district champions: Jaden Wright (90 pounds), Noah Talavera (100), Six Buck (112) and Daniel Snediker (124).
Shahala finished last in team scoring but had two district champions: Vinh Luong (85 pounds) and Treason Foreman (175).
Cascade’s one champion was Tanner Craig (95 pounds). The Liberty champion was Gideon Malychewski (118 pounds). The Wy’East champion was Noah Messman (80 pounds).
