Weather Eye: With showers, east winds, then heavy rain, weather will be mixed bag

A mixed bag of weather is on the way for us this week with some light showers, some east winds and then heavy rain by Thursday. Snow will fall in the Cascades, maybe a half foot or more, but a warm system will come in over the weekend and melt it away.’

So we are still waiting for a good start of the ski season, but it will have to wait a while longer. Maybe Christmas or after? There are still some indications of cooler weather between Christmas and New Year’s but who really knows?

The only concern to watch for the next seven days is if the atmospheric river of excessive rain drops over our area. Right now, it is favored to remain to our north. So meanwhile, not much action in the weather department.

So how is Vancouver doing weather-wise for the first half of the month? Rainfall is 3.04 inches, .15 of an inch above average. The average mean temperature is 43.1 degrees, 1.7 degrees above average. If you remember, we were way below normal last week but milder temperatures have increased that quite a bit.

Looking at forecast charts in more detail, it appears it will get cold and dry after Christmas. Not much moisture and somewhat favorable odds of below-freezing temperatures. Hopefully, a little snow will fall for Christmas.

California got its share of wet weather the past two weeks. As of Dec. 13, here are the month to date rainfall totals for December: San Francisco, 7.62 inches; Sacramento, 6.05 inches; San Jose 5.98, inches; San Diego, 3.58 inches; Long Beach, 3.49 inches; Los Angeles, 3.13 inches; Portland, 3.02 inches and Seattle, 1.97 inches. They sure needed the rain — just not all at once.

Enjoy your week and pray for snow.
