Sifton — Miss Idaho Sierra Sandison, a champion for people with diabetes who took to the stage in a swimsuit while wearing her insulin pump, appeared at Frontier Middle School on Dec. 10.

Sandison, 21, who has Type 1 diabetes, visited the school after 12-year-old Ella Pfeiler, a diabetic sixth-grader who is inspired by the pageant winner, wrote her a letter inviting her.

Ella was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 14 months old, according to her grandmother Deb LaFollette. Sandison presented Ella with a medal from pharmaceutical-maker Eli Lilly and Co. to honor her 10 years of living with the disease.

Sandison uses the #showmeyourpump hashtag on social media to inspire others with diabetes. “It is such a huge accomplishment, and such an inspiration, to see you living with and overcoming diabetes so many years later!” Sandison wrote about Ella on Instagram following her visit.
