Girls basketball: Columbia River 50, Evergreen 40

The Chieftains closed the game on a 23-6 run to pull away for the win.

Teaghan Cowles scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, when Columbia River outscored Evergreen 16-5. Marion Lilly also scored 15 for the Chieftains (4-0).

River coach Carl Click pointed to tough defense and improved shooting for the second-half turnaround.

Megan Bloom made six steals and Kate Kraft five steals to lead the defense, which forced a flurry of Evergreen turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Five players scored at least six points for Evergreen (1-2).
