A Vancouver woman who reported being stabbed by a stranger in her backyard on Monday fabricated the story, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies were called at about 1:30 p.m. to the woman’s home at 15705 N.E. 15th Place in the Fairgrounds neighborhood. She reported that an unknown man attacked her while she was on her back deck and used a large knife to slash her face and stab her in the chest and lower abdomen, investigators said.

She was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for treatment of injuries described by authorities as not life-threatening and relatively minor.

Deputies set up a containment area and dispatched a police dog to track the assailant. However, they were unable to locate any evidence or identify a suspect.

After further investigation, detectives with the sheriff’s major crimes unit learned that the woman made up the story and that her wounds were self-inflicted.

Authorities did not release the woman’s name and said the investigation is closed.
