Liquor Control Board clarifies rules for pot ads

The Washington State Liquor Control Board has issued a clarification about advertising of marijuana under the voter-approved I-502 legalization measure.

The new rules seem to clear the way for companies to advertise in publications, create their own merchandise through a separate business, advertise on bar coasters, offer farm tours, publish newspaper inserts and use social media.

Ramsey Hamide, a manager at Main Street Marijuana in Vancouver, said he was glad to hear about the change. “I’d love to throw a billboard up on I-5,” Hamide said. “We’re excited to see the new guidelines and we plan on pursuing advertising.”

There are rules limiting advertising in public areas, and children cannot be encouraged to use the product, rules that are similar to those affecting the liquor industry advertising.
