Community notebook: Hampton adds to USTA junior sectional title collection

Teen wins singles, doubles titles in Yakima

Vancouver’s Sammi Hampton won her second consecutive United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest Junior Sectional singles and doubles titles on Sunday at Yakima.

Hampton, a senior at Skyview High School and the top seed for the Sectionals, defeated No. 2 Bess Waldram of Portland 6-3, 6-3 in the Girls 18s singles final.

Later in the afternoon, Hampton and Waldram won the Girls 18s doubles title by defeating Catherine Cable of Spokane and Paiton Wagner of Cashmere 8-2. Cable won the Girls 16s singles title on Sunday.

Since winning her third consecutive high school state singles title at the end of May, Hampton has won four singles titles and two doubles titles this summer and was on the USTA Pacific Northwest team at the Girls 18s National Team Championships played at Claremont, Calif.

Other Clark County players who participated at the Junior Sectional Championships included Jen Lewis of Camas (Girls 18s), Andrew Newell of Vancouver (Boys 18s), Dominik Gorecki of Vancouver (Boys 16s), Mark Vasat of Camas (Boys 16s), McKenzie Schreiner of Camas (Girls 16s), Hannah Gianan of Washougal (Girls 16s), Spencer Kang of Camas (Boys 14s), Kate Keeney of Vancouver (Girls 14s), Jacob Gianan of Washougal (Boys 12s).

Stanfill helps Seattle club win rugby title

Vancouver native Tim Stanfill scored the opening try for the Seattle Saracens as they beat New York Old Blue to win the USA Rugby 7s National Championship on Aug.10 in Tukwila. Seattle won its second national championship in a row. Stanfill, a graduate of Evergreen High School, finished the tournament with four tries in total.

As national champions, the Seattle Club traveled to London for the World Club 7s tournament, which concluded on Sunday. Seattle won the consolation playoff at that tournament by winning twice in playoffs after winning one of three matches in pool play.

Special Olympics athlete picked for World Cup team

Clark County Special Olympics soccer player Santos Lopez was selected for a team that will participate in the first Special Olympics Unified Football World Cup.

The international soccer tournament is scheduled to be played in 2015 in Malaysia.

The roster of players ages 18-25 consists of nine Special Olympics athletes who have intellectual disabilities and eight unified partners, who are players without intellectual disabilities. Lopez was among the players from around the West Coast who invited to a tryout held Aug. 1-3 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwiila.

Locals play in soccer exhibition — Santos Lopez, Estevan Rosales and Ivan Soltero from Clark County Special Olympics played for Special Olympics North America in an exhibition soccer match against Special Olympics Germany on Aug. 5 at Providence Park in Portland. Also representing Clark County were and unified partners Payten Brooks and Olivia Schmitz.

The match was held the day before the MLS All-Star Game and was among the official activities surrounding the match between the MLS All-Stars and Bayern Munich.

Sight-impaired team enters Portland to Coast

With support from the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes, a team of nine blind and visually-impaired walkers and their guides will participate in the Portland to Coast Relay Walk on Friday and Saturday. Team Eye Rock is one of 400 walking teams scheduled to cover 132 miles from Portland to Seaside.

The Portland to Coast is a shorter version of the Hood to Coast Relay footrace from Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood to Seaside. This is the 33rd Hood to Coast Relay. A total of 1,050 teams of up to 12 runners are entered for the 199-mile race.

The first teams are scheduled to leave Timberline at 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

This is the 24th Portland to Coast Walk Relay and the 17th year for the Portland to Coast High School Challenge, a footrace for teams of high school students.

McChesney repeats Leverich run victory

Cutting six seconds off his time from the previous week, Jesse McChesney won the Clark County Running Club’s Leverich Park 5-kilometer Run on Aug. 13.

He covered the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes and 24 seconds. McChesney, 26, beat Oscar Bauman, 41, by four seconds.

Savannah Craig, 15, was the first female finisher. Her time was 19:52, five seconds faster than Jenna Melanson, 16.

A total of 125 runners completed the race.

The CCRC series of Wednesday evening summer runs shifts to Marine Park this week. The Marine Park 5K will start at 6:30 p.m. to allow more time for the annual CCRC picnic that follows the race.

Paddleboard race coming to Washougal

The SUP Salmon Classic will bring professional and recreational standup paddleboard competitors to Washougal on Aug. 31.

The event will be staged at Captain William Clark Regional Park at Cottonwood Beach. There is an 8-mile race at 10 a.m. for professional paddle boarders and a 4-mile race for amateurs at 10:45 a.m. Racing for youth and novice paddle boarders is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
