The Lacamas Valley Sheep Dog Trial will feature top herding dogs and their handlers as they compete to quickly herd and move a group of sheep through a timed course. There will be a public announcer on hand to explain the action on the field for spectators. Lawn chairs and binoculars are encouraged. The finals will take place Sunday to crown the top dog.

When: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Johnston Dairy Farm, 104 N.E. 252nd Ave., Camas.

Admission: $5, free for ages 12 and younger.

The sheep dog trials are among many options for getting out and about this weekend. Here are some other suggestions:

2. Cream cheese and lox

There will also be a crafts area and demonstrations from the Clark County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Marshal’s Office.

Where: Congregation Kol Ami, 7800 N.E. 119th St., Vancouver.

3. Esther Short shootout

This year, Hoops on the River has moved to encompass Esther Short Park with plenty of three-on-three basketball action on 21 courts. There will also be a 3-point shootout, slam-dunk contest, celebrity basketball games, vendor and a youth wellness fair. Proceeds benefit One Team Kids Foundation and Share Vancouver.

When: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Sunday.

Where: Esther Short Park, West Eighth and Columbia streets, Vancouver.

4. Rail time fun

Chelatchie Prairie Railroad’s regular scenic trips will be tinged with a bit of steam and Old West danger. Pulled by the railroad’s restored steam engine, a gang of train “robbers” will attempt to steal passengers’ coins before the sheriff arrives during the 12-mile round-trip ride through North Clark County. Passengers will also travel a 330-foot-long tunnel with a stop to visit the local waterfalls. Reservations recommended.

When: Noon and 2:30 p.m. today and Sunday.

Where: Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, 207 N. Railroad Ave., Yacolt.

Admission: $20, $19 for seniors, $15 for ages 5 to 12, $13 for ages 2 to 4.

Telephone: 360-686-3559.

5. Price of perfection

Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) lives in a city-state whose citizens aspire to perfection by predictable sameness, with the Receiver of Memory (Jeff Bridges) as the only one who remembers mankind’s past. When Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) hands out appointed roles to Jonas and his peers, he learns he will inherit the Receiver’s role. “The Giver” is rated PG-13.
