A SWAT team standoff with a gunman who made threats to harm a family member and himself ended safely early today.

James M. Kalasky, 32, was arrested at 1:45 a.m. after SWAT team members distracted him with a flash-bang grenade. He was taken to the Clark County Jail, where he is being held on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, felony harassment (death threats) and unlawful imprisonment.

The standoff began at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when deputies were called to check on a man at 17410 N.E. Stoney Meadows Drive. Patrol deputies were told the man was armed with a rifle, made threats toward a family member and was suicidal.

When deputies arrived, the suspect, Kalasky, allegedly pointed his rifle at deputies and refused to come out of the house or lay down his weapon.

Deputies evacuated the large, luxurious home and called for the SWAT team and a crisis negotiator.

Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency made reverse 911 calls to neighbors, asking them to remain in their homes. The Kalasky home sits on a one-acre lot, with neighbors spaced farther apart than in most subdivisions.

The incident finally ended after six hours when SWAT team members were able to distract Kalasky long enough to arrest him, according to a sheriff’s news release.
