Opponents of the Tesoro-Savage plan to build the Northwest’s largest oil-by-rail terminal in Vancouver will host a public forum Thursday night about the risks of oil trains running through Washougal.

The forum is sponsored by Friends of the Columbia Gorge, Columbia Riverkeeper and the Sierra Club. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 2350 Main St., Washougal.

Don Steinke, an outspoken oil-terminal protester from Vancouver, said the discussion will feature six presenters. The group will focus on a range of issues, from regulations and fire and safety concerns to fishery impacts and environmental threats, he said.

The goal, Steinke said, is to encourage the Washougal City Council and others to draft a resolution opposing the Tesoro-Savage plan.

“The people of Washougal are not aware of what they can do to help,” Steinke said in an email to The Columbian. “To that end, we are sponsoring a public forum in Washougal.”
