A distracted driver crashed into a Vancouver bicyclist Thursday morning, sending the man to the hospital, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Todd Mobley, 41, of Vancouver was wearing a helmet and protective gear pedaling west in the bike lane on Northeast 63rd Street when he was struck by a vehicle near 58th Avenue at about 8:30 a.m., Sgt. Fred Neiman said.

The driver of the vehicle, Jacob Piel, 31, also of Vancouver, was trying to retrieve a pacifier that his child in the back seat had dropped, causing the crash, Neiman said.

Mobley sustained injuries that Neiman described as not life-threatening. He was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, where he was evaluated in the emergency department.

Piel was cited on suspicion of driving while suspended and second-degree negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
