A Vancouver Futsal Academy team won the boys under-9 division championship during the U.S. Futsal National Championships. The five-a-side soccer national tournament was held July 24-27 in Anaheim, Calif.
The Vancouver team won three of four matches, including an 8-3 win over a team from Stanislaus United Soccer Club of Tracy, Calif., in the championship match. A year ago, the Vancouver team lost in the national semifinals to a club from Stanislaus United.
Vancouver Futsal Academy scored six seconds into the match and led 5-2 by halftime. Each match lasted 40 minutes.
Vancouver Futsal Academy is affiliated with the Slavic Christian Academy of Vancouver.
In addition to open divisions for men and women, the nationals included an over-35 men’s tournament and 10 boys age-group tournaments and six girl age-group tournaments.
Players for the Vancouver Futsal Academy were: goalkeeper Daniel Buliga, team captain Michael Fedoruk, defenders Daniel Danilur, Sergey Vozniy and Jason Zaharov, and forwards Mathew Shafarenko, Daniel Seleshiy, Yelisey Mironuk, Tatyana Ozeruga, Maxim Dryuk and Yugene Buliga. The backup goalkeeper was Derek Ozeruga.
The team was coached by Dmitriy Dauksh. The club’s administrator is Andrey Dolbinin.
McChesney wins CCRC Leverich Park race
Jesse McChesney and Oscar Bauman were the first two finishers in the Clark County Running Club’s weekly run on Aug. 6.
McChesney, 26, won the race, completing the Leverich Park 5-kilometer run in 15 minutes and 30 seconds. Bauman, 41, finished 12 seconds later and 57 seconds in front of the third finisher.
A total of 127 runners completed the race. Complete results are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.
The series of summer runs returns this Wednesday to the course around Leverich Park and on parts of the Discovery Trail.
The run starts at 7 p.m. participants should arrive by 6:40 p.m. to register. Cost is $3, free for members of the Clark County Running Club.
Olympic champions to lead swimming clinic
Olympic gold medal winners Jason Lezak and Misty Hyman will be in Vancouver on Saturday to give a clinic for competitive swimmers ages 8 to 18.
A few spaces remained on Monday for the Mutual of Omaha Breakout! Swim Clinic hosted by the Columbia River Swim Team from 8 a.m. to noon at Cascade Athletic Club, 16096 S.E. 15th St. The in-water clinic will focus on stroke technique.

Lezak won gold and silver medals at the 2000 Olympics. The top-ranked sprinter in the world at one time, Lezak also won a relay gold medal in the 2004 Olympics and swam for the USA at the 2008 Olympics.
Hyman won gold in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2000 Olympics, beating Australian Susie O’Neill who hadn’t lost a 200-meter butterfly race in six years.
San Diego soccer team wins in Vancouver
A team from San Diego won the Volkswagen Junior Masters National Tournament, an under-12 boys tournament played last week at Harmony Sports Complex in Vancouver.
San Diego Surf scored three goals in the second half to defeat the Eastside Timbers of Gresham 3-0 in the championship match. Five teams, including a host team representing the Washington Timbers of Vancouver, participated in the two-day tournament. The nationals were held in the Portland-area as part of the Major League Soccer All-Star Game festivities.
