A 19-year-old man from Pullman was arrested Monday afternoon after reportedly speeding and crashing his vehicle in the Brush Prairie area.
A Washington State Patrol sergeant heading south on state Highway 503 around 3:20 p.m. saw the vehicle, described as a hatchback, pass him at a high speed on state Highway 503. His speedometer clocked the southbound vehicle at 94 mph, according to Trooper Will Finn.
The sergeant turned on his lights and sirens and turned around, trying to catch up with the vehicle. The hatchback sped off and soon crashed into a light pole near Northeast 154th Street, which is close to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office central precinct, Finn said. The sergeant, along with an off-duty Portland police officer and sheriff’s deputies, pulled all five occupants out of the hatchback at gunpoint. None of them were injured, and they were all taken into custody.
The driver, Alan J. Higgins, was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, two counts of reckless endangerment and minor in possession of alcohol. He tested below the legal alcohol limit, Finn said. A 15-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy and another 19-year-old were cited for possessing alcohol. They were later picked up by a parent.
A 26-year-old who was in the front passenger seat was taken to a restaurant to get a ride home.
