Jordan Chiles of Vancouver’s Nadenov Gymnastics won the all-around championship for junior gymnasts on Saturday at the Secret U.S. Classic in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Chiles, 13, posted an all-around score of 57.35 and won the vault competition with a scored of 14.90. The juniors competition is for girls ages 11-15.
Chiles competed for the United States junior national team in March and will next compete at the P&G Championships Aug. 21-24 in Pittsburgh. The P&G Championships are the annual national championships for USA Gymnastics. Chiles placed 11th in her division at the 2013 nationals.
Chiles finished 0.60 ahead of runner-up Nia Dennis of Ohio for the all-around title. In addition to winning the vault, Chiles tied for fourth place on both the uneven parallel bars and on the balance beam, and tied for sixth on the floor exercise.
Chiles will be an eighth-grader at Pleasant Valley Middle School.
Special Olympics athletes earn medals
Nine Special Olympics softball teams from Clark County competed in the Southwest Washington Regionals on July 26, at LBA Park in Olympia. Teams ranged from beginners (individual skills) to very advanced skills (Master 1). New this year, Clark County created a seniors team for athletes ages 16-21 and a juniors team for ages 8-15.
The Cardinals, Hornets, Pirates, Reds and two individuals skills participants won gold medals and will compete at the Special Olympics State Games on Aug. 15-17 in Everett.

Golfers win gold medals — Andrew Stekhuizen and Unified Partner Bill Blue won the gold medal in the 9-hole regional tournament on July 27 at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma. They will compete at the Special Olympics State Games on Aug. 15-17 in Everett.

Bowling registration — Next on the schedule for Clark County Special Olympics is bowling. It is free to participate. Registration is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Pied Piper Pizza, 124 Fourth Plain in Vancouver.
Local golfers place in Oregon Stroke Play
Hayden Christensen of Brush Prairie tied for fifth place in the Oregon Stroke Play Championship, which concluded on Sunday at Juniper Golf Club in Redmond. Christensen had a 54-hole score of 212, nine strokes behind Conner Kumpula of Albany, Ore.
Players from Vancouver in the open division of the 62nd-annual tournament were Brett Johnson (217), Alistair Docherty (218), John-Michael Pilot (221), Matt Hartley (225), Taylor Smith (226), Nicholas Huff (230) and David Patterson (231).
In the Senior Division, Tim O’Neal of Vancouver tied for 10th place at 222. Mike Gleason of Camas shot 225 and Scott Alford of Camas, shot 229. Randy Mahar of Portland won the Senior Division with a 216.
CCRC race draws 115
Jesse McChesney edged Oscar Bauman at the finish line to win the Clark County Running Club’s Wednesday race on July 30.
McChesney, 26, completed the 3-mile Round Lake Trail run in 16 minutes and 46 seconds, one second faster than Bauman, 41. Both runners live in Vancouver.
Jenny Teppo of Vancouver was the first woman to finish. Her time was 21:38.
A total of 115 people finished the race, It was the second run at Round Lake in the CCRC series of Wednesday run runs. Complete results are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.
The series shifts to Leverich Park the next two Wednesdays. Races start at 7 p.m. Participants should arrive by 6:40 to register. Cost is $3, free for CCRC members.
Deadline near for Hoops on the River
The deadline to register for the Hoops on the River 3-on-3 basketball tournament is Aug. 12. The tournament is Aug. 14-17 at Esther Short Park in Vancouver.
The tournament is being revived after not being held in 2013. It is a fundraiser for Share and for One Team Kids Foundation. Share provides support for the hungry and homeless in Clark County. The One Team Kids Foundation assists local families that need help to pay for after school sports and recreational programs for their children.
