Get outside and watch some high school baseball.
After showers and downpours speckled our weekend in Clark County, the forecast for this week calls for dry days and rising temperatures.
According to weather.com, the forecasted high for Thursday — the first day of May — is 87 degrees.
That comes as great news for high school baseball teams, especially in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.
The 4A GSHL was scheduled to complete its 15-game regular season with each team playing four scheduled games.
That made it imperative that all teams attempt to complete all previously postponed league games, which they all did Saturday before the showers arrived.
This week, the 4A GSHL will play baseball games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. That means they’ll miss the projected warmest day of 2014 on Thursday, but highs are expected to be in the upper 70s to low 80s on Wednesday and Friday.
Union heads into the week with a two-game lead on Skyview and Battle Ground. And it’s possible the Titans could lock up the league title with wins Monday (over Skyview) and Tuesday (over Heritage).
Union (9-2), Battle Ground (7-4), Skyview (7-4) and Camas (6-5) are looking like they will be the four teams heading to the district playoffs next week. Evergreen (3-8) needs a 4-0 week, and some help to keep its postseason hopes alive.
Things got suddenly very ?interesting in the 3A GSHL. Through last Thursday, Columbia River was rolling along with an unbeaten season and a No. 3 state ranking.
Now, the Chieftains find themselves heading into the final week of the league season on a two-game losing streak after falling to Kelso (1-0) and Hudson’s Bay (5-4).
Those two losses allowed Mountain View (10-2) to take a half-game lead over the Chieftains (9-2) in the 3A GSHL.
We all expected that the Thunder and Chieftains would battle for the league title in the final two league games on Wednesday and Friday.
But if Kelso (7-3) can knock off River at home on Monday, the Hilanders could put themselves in position to contend for at least a share of the league title should River and Mountain View beat up on each other later in the week.
The Hilanders have a busy week, with five games in five days. But after River, the other four games are against teams below Kelso in the standings.
But if River beats Kelso on Monday, it sets up a potential two-game showdown with Mountain View. Wednesday’s game is slated for Mountain View, while River will host on Friday.
River won the first meeting, so if the two teams split this week and remain tied after Friday, the tiebreaker would go to the Chieftains.
