Vancouver open house will set out future of landfill site

An open house next week will give residents a chance to learn about long-term planning efforts at the former Leichner Landfill site in the Orchards area.

Clark County is focusing much of its effort on the 74-acre landfill site itself, plus 46 adjacent acres. The county hired Maul Foster & Alongi of Vancouver last year to lead the master planning process, which will evaluate potential reuses. The process will evaluate market demand and infrastructure needed for development, but not specific users or detailed building layouts.

Options will likely be limited for at least another five to 10 years, as the landfill continues to settle as buried waste decomposes and produces methane gas, according to the county. The landfill closed in 1991.

A 35-acre site to the south of the landfill, the Leichner Campus, has more potential, according to the county, with flat topography and no buried garbage.

The open house is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the Vancouver Church of Christ, 9019 N.E. 86th St. in Vancouver.

The old landfill is east of Northeast 94th Avenue and north of Padden Parkway. County leaders agreed to buy the site in 2011.
