State troopers will patrol Southwest Washington highways over the weekend in search of drivers who don’t move over for emergency vehicles.
State law requires drivers to slow and move to the left — if safe — when passing emergency vehicles on the shoulder. Emergency vehicles include police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks and highway maintenance vehicles with their lights flashing.
Those who speed past or fail to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle can be fined or face charges. A conviction of endangering an emergency worker’s life can yield jail time and a 60-day mandatory license suspension.
