Student accused of arson after small fire at Fort Vancouver High

An 18-year-old Vancouver man accused of intentionally starting a small fire at Fort Vancouver High School appeared in court Monday on a charge of first-degree arson.

Samuil Cosovan admitted to setting fire twice to the top of a table in a classroom at the high school around 10 a.m. Thursday, according to court documents filed in the case.

Cosovan allegedly used a lighter to ignite cologne on fire, which caused only a mild discoloration to the table, according to Vancouver Police Department Spokeswoman Kim Kapp.

Because the fire was set intentionally and students surrounded the table at the time, Kapp said, Cosovan was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson. The classroom where the fire was set adjoins other classrooms, meaning students had to evacuate through the room where Cosovan set the fire, Kapp said in court documents.

A videotape of the fire was reviewed by police, Kapp said. The video had been posted on a social media app.

Judge Robert Lewis set Cosovan’s bail at $40,000 and scheduled his arraignment for May 2.
