The highlight of this week’s high school sports schedule is easy to find.
It’s the only event that features two nationally ranked teams.
On Friday, the Skyview boys soccer team will travel to Doc Harris Stadium to face Camas.
In the most recent national rankings by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Camas boys team is No. 9 in the nation. Skyview is No. 10.
Now these national rankings do come with a caveat. Not every state in the country holds its boys soccer season in the spring. In some states, soccer season is in the fall. In others, it’s in the winter.
Still, the spring rankings includes teams from Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Iowa, Virginia, Tennessee and Oklahoma, among others. So being ranked on this list remains a significant achievement.
And, according to the NSCAA, Camas and Skyview are the two best teams in the state of Washington, regardless of classification.
Both teams are undefeated. Camas is 9-0-2. The two ties came in the Papermakers’ season opener against Skyline — which happens to be ranked No. 20 in the nation — and a 0-0 tie with Skyview on April 1 at Kiggins Bowl.
That tie is the lone blemish on Skyview’s record.
So Friday’s match at Doc Harris Stadium could very well determine the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League title — unless, of course, the two teams tie again.
And, then, there are also the Union Titans.
Camas plays Union at 8 p.m. Tuesday at McKenzie Stadium as the first round of league play ends. If the Papermakers get past the Titans, the showdown will be on Friday.
Expected a good crowd at Doc Harris Stadium.
Other highlights
• Union, Camas and Mountain View are among the teams expected to compete in the Titan Cup, a Ryder Cup-style girls golf event that will be held Monday at Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield.
• Class 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens League will open league play in softball with a full slate of games.
• Camas, Skyview, Heritage, Evergreen, Union, Mountain View, Prairie and Woodland are among the local teams scheduled to compete in the 50th Centennial Invitational track and field meet in Gresham, Ore., on Saturday.
The forecast
The week appears to be filled with a lot of clouds and showers. But no day in particular looks like it will be a soaker, as the chance for showers range from 30 to 60 percent all week. After a high in the 60s on Monday, highs the rest of the week will be in the mid to upper 50s.
