A 28-year-old Carson woman who tried to swim across the Wind River in Skamania County on Friday evening was swept downstream and rescued a few hours later.
Amanda Smith attempted to swim across the Columbia River tributary from the Wind River hot holes around 8:30 p.m. Friday and was pulled downriver, according to Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox. One of her friends reported her as missing to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies, Skamania County Emergency Medical Services, Skamania fire districts 1 and 2, the Volcano Rescue Team, Wind River Search and Rescue, and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter all went to the area near Shipherd Falls. The helicopter was unable to reach Smith in the river canyon, which was surrounded by tall trees, Cox said.
About 11:30 p.m. medics reached Smith using a rope system. She was taken out of the river canyon and transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
