Spring break is over. Or should we say, spring breaks are over.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve had a full week of prep schedules.

But the schedule is packed with events this week, and we’ll start things off this week by talking about girls golf.

Girl golfers are a hardy bunch.

Unlike their male counterparts, who golf in the warmth and sunshine of September and early October, the girls have to slog through the cold and wet of March and April before things generally improve in May.

And wouldn’t you figured, last week when most of Clark County was on spring break, we had perfect golfing weather.

But the spring showers are set to return by midweek, just in time for the Chieftain Invitational on Thursday.

The Chieftain Invite is the first big event of the spring golfing season, an 18-hole tournament at Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland that brings together most golf programs in Southwest Washington.

And while this year’s crop of golfers may lack sure-fire state title contenders, Clark County does have some young up-and-coming players ready to make their mark.

Once again, Southwest Washington will host on the Class 4A and 3A state tournaments. The girls will be playing at Club Green Meadows (4A) and Lewis River (3A).

Other key events

• League play in the 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens Leagues resumes today.

• Tuesday is a busy day with league baseball and soccer games in the 4A, 3A and 2A GSHL as well as the 1A Trico League. There are also league matches for girls tennis and girls golf. Softball teams in the 4A and 3A GSHL won’t open league play until next week.

• The John Ingram Twilight track and field meet is set for Friday at Columbia River High School. Evergreen, Skyview, Fort Vancouver, Hudson’s Bay, Prairie, Hockinson, Ridgefield and La Center are scheduled to send athletes to compete.

• Camas, Skyview and Hudson’s Bay are slated to send athletes to the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore., on Friday and Saturday.

• Stevenson is hosting the Al McKee Gorge Invitational on Saturday.
