LEGISLATIVE PAGE PROGRAM
Astrid DuBois and Sequoia Pullella Barca, students at Vancouver iTech Prepatory School, and Mariah Curtiss, a student at River Homelink, served as pages for Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, in Olympia. DuBois is the daughter of Peter DuBois and Ingrid Dankmeyer, both of Battle Ground. Pullella Barca is the daughter of Ron Barca and Nettie Pullella Barca of Battle Ground. Curtiss is the daughter of Neal and Julie Curtiss of Brush Prairie. In the weeklong program, students attended page school and assisted on the House floor.
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD COMPETITION
Jason Lee Middle School’s Science Olympiad Team won first place in the Southwest Region at a competition on March 8 in Longview. The team will advance to the state competition, April 12 at Eastern Washington University. Shawna Oster, an eighth-grade science teacher at Jason Lee, coaches the team. A goal of Science Olympiad, a national nonprofit, is to create a passion for learning science and to make science relevant to students’ lives.
PACIFIC NORTHWEST FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION
Four robotics teams from Southwest Washington competed in the Oregon City District event this past month, with all taking home gold medals or awards. Participating teams from Clark County were: Team 2471 from Camas, Hockinson and Washougal high schools; Team 3674 from Washington State University Vancouver Extension and 4-H; Team 2517 from Evergreen High School; and Team 2811 from Skyview High School. To complete projects for the competition, students work in teams with an adult mentor and design a robot, and build it within six weeks.
